What began as a shared archive of cabin photographs among friends became one of the internet's most-loved collections. This is the book of it: handmade cabins, tree houses, converted vehicles and off-grid retreats, photographed in remote settings, with the stories of the people who built them.

It is a book to lose an hour in rather than read cover to cover, and it makes a genuinely good gift for anyone quietly planning their own escape.

Key Features
  • The photography. Hundreds of images of handmade and off-grid retreats from around the world.
  • The range. Tree houses, converted vehicles and small timber cabins.
  • Where it started. Includes the story of Beaver Brook, the property behind the project.
  • Format. A 336-page hardcover, photographed throughout.
Pūrē Standard
  • Building small, with what is to hand. Every cabin in here was made by someone with more resourcefulness than budget. That is the same instinct behind a low-tox home: use less, choose better, make it yourself where you can.
  • The one people do not put down. It is a book to lose an hour in rather than read through, which is exactly what makes it work as a gift.
  • Paper and board throughout. No plastic jacket, no shrink wrap, nothing to peel off and bin.
  • A book, not a consumable. Nothing in it wears out, and it is the sort that gets lent and handed on rather than thrown away.

Our Take

Every cabin in here was built by someone with more resourcefulness than budget, out of whatever the site gave them. That is the same instinct behind a low-tox home: use less, choose better.

I bought this as a bit of an impulse purchase and honestly so glad I did. The photos are beautiful and there is something so calming about flicking through it with a coffee. I love seeing all the different little cabins and the way people have created these amazing spaces without making them feel overly polished. It has definitely given me a few ideas for our own little escape one day!
