The Detail

Gentle everyday cleansing with organic sugar soap

Dr. Bronner's Organic Sugar Soap is the softer, creamier cousin of their famous castile. Organic sugar and white grape juice act as humectants, drawing water into the skin instead of stripping it, while shikakai powder gives a mild cleanse. No added fragrance, USDA certified organic, and a pump that lives by the sink or in the shower for hands, face, body and hair.

Key Features
  • USDA Certified Organic under the National Organic Program, and Certified Fair Trade.
  • No added fragrance, made for sensitive skin and babies.
  • 4-in-1: hands, face, body and hair.
  • Organic sugar and white grape juice hydrate rather than strip, for a creamy lather that rinses clean.
  • EWG Verified, meeting the Environmental Working Group's strictest standards for health and safety.
  • No synthetic detergents, preservatives or foaming agents.
  • No-clog pump. 355ml. Made in the USA.
Pure Standard
  • Sugar is doing something, not decorating the label. Sucrose and white grape juice are humectants, meaning they pull moisture into the skin. That is why this lathers creamier and feels less stripping than a straight castile, and it is the reason we stock both rather than picking one.
  • Certified organic to food standards. Not organic-ish, not made-with-organic. USDA National Organic Program certified, the same programme that governs food, applied to a soap. Very few body washes clear that bar.
  • Shikakai has been doing this for centuries. An Ayurvedic cleansing pod, sourced here from organic smallholder farms, that cleans hair without the squeaky stripped feeling. It is also what keeps the pump from clogging.
  • It genuinely washes hair. Most 4-in-1 claims are optimistic. This one works if you follow it with something lightly acidic, which is the trick nobody tells you: Dr. Bronner's own citrus hair rinse, or just diluted apple cider vinegar or lemon juice.
  • On the palm kernel oil. This is not one of our palm oil free lines, and we would rather say so plainly. The palm kernel oil here is organic and Certified Fair Trade, from Dr. Bronner's own audited supply chains rather than the commodity market. If palm free is your line in the sand, this is not your bottle. If fairly sourced palm is acceptable, this is about as good as it gets.
  • Readily biodegradable, tested properly. Verified under OECD Guideline 310, in a 100% post-consumer recycled bottle.
  • Where it loses marks. The bottle is 100% recycled, but the pump mechanism is mixed plastic and far harder to recycle, and there is no refill in the range. That is the whole of our Packaging deduction.

How to Use
  • Hands, face and body: one pump into wet hands, lather, rinse.
  • Hair: work one pump into wet hair until it lathers, rub through, then rinse. Repeat for longer or thicker hair.
  • After washing hair, follow with a lightly acidic rinse to leave it smooth. Dr. Bronner's citrus hair rinse, or diluted apple cider vinegar or lemon juice.
  • Unlike the castile soaps, this is ready to use and does not need diluting.
  • Do not refill this pump with Dr. Bronner's 18-in-1 Pure-Castile Liquid Soap. It will clog the dispenser.
  • Keep out of eyes. Flush with water for 15 minutes if it gets in, and see a doctor if irritation persists.

Our Take

The softer, creamier cousin of the famous castile, and the one to reach for if straight soap leaves your skin feeling tight. Organic sugar and white grape juice pull moisture in rather than stripping it out, and shikakai means it actually works on hair, not just in theory. Ready to use straight from the pump, no diluting, which makes it the easy one to put by the basin. USDA certified organic to the same standard as food.

Purely Organic

Good to know

Frequently asked

What is it for?

A 4-in-1 cleanser for hands, face, body and hair. Organic sugar and white grape juice act as humectants that draw water into the skin, with shikakai powder for a mild cleanse.

Do I need to dilute it?

No. Unlike Dr. Bronner's 18-in-1 castile soaps, the sugar soaps are ready to use straight from the pump.

Does it really work on hair?

Yes, with one trick. Work a pump into wet hair until it lathers, rub through and rinse, repeating for longer or thicker hair. Then follow with something lightly acidic, either Dr. Bronner's citrus hair rinse or diluted apple cider vinegar or lemon juice. Skip that step and hair can feel a bit rough.

Can I refill the pump with the castile soap?

No. Dr. Bronner's specifically warn that refilling this dispenser with their 18-in-1 Pure-Castile Liquid Soap will clog it. The shikakai suspended in the sugar base is what keeps this pump flowing.

How is it different from the castile liquid soap?

The castile is an 18-in-1 concentrate you dilute for everything from body wash to floor cleaner. This is a ready-to-use 4-in-1 for people, with sugar and grape juice added so it feels creamier and less stripping on skin and hair.

Is it certified organic?

Yes, USDA Certified Organic under the National Organic Program, which is the same programme that governs food. It is also Certified Fair Trade and EWG Verified.

Is it suitable for babies and sensitive skin?

Yes. It has no added fragrance, no essential oils, and no synthetic detergents, preservatives or foaming agents. Keep it out of eyes.

Is it palm oil free?

No, and we would rather be straight about it. It contains organic, Certified Fair Trade palm kernel oil from Dr. Bronner's own audited supply chains rather than the commodity market. If you need strictly palm free, this is not the right bottle.
