Softener without the quats. Most commercial fabric conditioners work on synthetic quaternary ammonium compounds, which is also why towels stop absorbing after a few months. This one uses an esterquat made from sunflower oil instead, with guar bean extract for static, and takes its scent from just two certified organic essential oils. Crisp and herbaceous rather than the usual laundry-aisle sweetness.

- The active ingredient is named, which almost no softener does. Read The Label specify esterquat from sunflower oil rather than hiding behind "cationic surfactants". Being able to name the softening agent is the whole argument for a brand called Read The Label, and they follow through.
- No quats, and that is the point. Read The Label describe synthetic quaternary ammonium compounds, the active in most commercial softeners, as skin sensitisers linked to hormone disruption in prolonged skin contact. Whatever you make of that, quats are also what leaves the waxy build-up that stops towels absorbing.
- MIT and CMIT are on the free-from list. Methylisothiazolinone is one of the more common contact allergens in household liquids and rarely gets called out by name. Naming it is a good sign.
- Two essential oils, both certified organic. Rather than a long fragrance blend. Eucalyptus dives for the crisp side, geranium for the floral.
- Where we would like more. It is a litre of liquid shipped from the UK, which is a real freight cost for something you could make more concentrated. It is also fragranced: essential oils are still fragrance, and they stay on bedding and clothing after the wash, so it is not the right choice if you are sensitive to scent.

How to Use

- Any wash. Works in both hot and cold, and suits all fabric types.
- How much. Dose to your machine's softener fill line. Read The Label do not publish a millilitre dose.
- No dryer sheets. You will not need them.
- On towels. Read The Label state it softens without build-up, so it is intended to be safe on them. If your towels have already lost absorbency from a previous softener, wash them once with white vinegar and no detergent to strip the residue first.
