Flat-leaf parsley, native to the central Mediterranean and one of the most widely cultivated herbs there is. It is in everything from tabbouleh to chimichurri to salsa verde, and it is the sort of thing you want a permanent supply of rather than a limp supermarket bunch every fortnight. This is the certified organic version of the packet. Roughly 150 seeds.

Key Features
  • Certified organic seed. Carrying the Australian Organic bud logo on the packet.
  • Flat-leaf Italian variety. Stronger flavoured than curly types.
  • Approximately 150 seeds per packet. Enough for a standing supply.
  • Tolerates part shade. As well as full sun.
  • Germinates in 3 to 5 weeks. Slower than most herbs, so be patient.
Pūrē Standard
  • The organic claim here is a real one. The packet carries the Australian Organic bud, which is a third-party certification mark rather than a marketing word. Certified organic seed rules out synthetic chemical seed treatment, which is exactly the question we could not answer on the rest of this range.
  • It is the one to choose if treatment matters to you. Third-party certification is the only version of that answer we can stand behind, and this is the only packet in the range that carries it.
  • It will grow where other herbs sulk. Parsley takes part shade, which makes it one of the few genuinely useful things for a patch that does not get sun all day.
  • Paper packet, nothing else. Close to the smallest packaging footprint of anything we sell.
  • Where we would like more. Little Veggie Patch Co do not name the certifying body or a certification number in their listing, and they publish no germination rate or packing date. The bud logo on the pack is the evidence, and we would rather point you to it than dress it up.

How to Use
  • Sow directly into the patch. The seeds are small, so you will need to thin the seedlings out once they are up.
  • Allow 3 to 5 weeks to germinate. It is slower than most herbs.
  • Spacing and depth. 20cm apart, 1cm deep.
  • Position. Full sun or part shade.
  • Soil. Free draining with plenty of compost. In pots, use a good quality potting mix. As Little Veggie Patch Co put it, quality is typically correlated to price.
  • Pick from the outside in. And it will keep producing for months.
When to Plant
  • Zone 1, cool. September to April.
  • Zone 2, temperate. September to May.

Our Take

Flat-leaf Italian parsley, the workhorse herb that ends up in almost everything and asks for very little. This is the certified organic packet, and it will also grow in part shade.

Good to know

Frequently asked

Is it really certified organic?

The packet carries the Australian Organic bud logo, which is a third-party certification mark. Little Veggie Patch Co do not name the certifying body or a certification number in their listing, so the logo on the pack is the evidence we are pointing to. Certified organic seed rules out synthetic chemical seed treatment.

When should I sow parsley in Perth?

Perth and the south-west are in Little Veggie Patch Co's Zone 2, temperate, so September to May. Zone 1 (cool) is September to April, and Zones 3 and 4 (subtropical and tropical) can sow anytime.

Will it grow in shade?

Part shade is fine, which makes parsley one of the few genuinely useful things for a patch that does not get sun all day.

How do I sow it?

Sow directly into the patch at 1cm deep and 20cm apart, in free-draining soil with plenty of compost. The seeds are small, so thin the seedlings once they are up. Allow 3 to 5 weeks to germinate.

How many seeds are in a packet?

Approximately 150.

What is the difference between flat-leaf and curly parsley?

Flat-leaf Italian parsley has a stronger, more robust flavour and is what you want for tabbouleh, chimichurri and salsa verde. Curly is milder and more often used as a garnish.

What grows well nearby?

Little Veggie Patch Co recommend carrots, chives, tomato and asparagus.
