Hand poured in Australia into 200g of soy wax with a wooden wick, in an amber glass jar worth keeping.

- Soy rather than paraffin. Paraffin is a petroleum by-product; soy is a plant wax that burns cooler and cleaner, with less soot. For something you burn in a closed room for hours, the wax is the decision that matters most.
- A wooden wick has no metal core at all. Cheap cored wicks use a metal support to stay upright, and while lead wicks are long banned, a wooden wick sidesteps the question entirely. It also burns with a wider, lower flame, which is why the wax pools evenly.

How to Use
- Trim every time. Take the wooden wick down to about 3mm before each burn. If it will not stay lit, it is almost always the wick needing a trim.
- The first burn matters. Let the wax pool reach the edges of the jar, two to three hours, which prevents tunnelling for the life of the candle.
- Four hours maximum. Longer sessions overheat the wax and the vessel.
- Never unattended. Keep away from draughts, children and pets.
- Keep the jar. Stop burning when about 10mm of wax remains, then wash it out and reuse it.

My wooden wick keeps going out. What am I doing wrong?
Almost always the wick needs trimming. Take it back to about 3mm before every burn, and make sure there is no debris in the wax pool. Wooden wicks want a short wick, not a long one.
How do I stop it tunnelling?
Get the first burn right. Let the wax pool spread all the way to the edge of the jar, which takes two to three hours. A candle remembers its first burn, and one that tunnels early will tunnel for the rest of its life.
