Pre-order, dispatch date to be confirmed. Mint, without the shouting. Spearmint is the gentler cousin of peppermint: fresh and faintly sweet rather than cold and medicinal, and it carries none of the extra cautions peppermint does. Urban Sun describe it as milder and a little sweeter, which is exactly right. Marked 100% organic and pure on the bottle, 15ml of Mentha Spicata, bottled in Australia on the Gold Coast.

Pre-order
  • Dispatch date to be confirmed. It depends on the maker's next delivery. Email us for the current estimate. Payment is taken at checkout, which is how we hold your bottle against the order.
  • Ordering other things too? Tell us and we will split the parcel so the in-stock items leave now at no extra cost.
  • Changed your mind? Email us any time before it ships and we will refund it, no questions.
Key Features
  • Single oil, not a blend. Mentha Spicata, marked 100% organic and pure on the carton.
  • 15ml amber glass. Roughly 300 drops, with an integrated dropper insert.
  • Australian owned, bottled on the Gold Coast. Urban Sun are a family-run business, certified Australian owned. The oils themselves are sourced rather than grown here.
  • Mint you can live with. Fresh and lightly sweet rather than the cold hit of peppermint, so it works in a small room without clearing it.
  • No additional cautions. Peppermint carries pregnancy, pet and homeopathy warnings. Spearmint carries none beyond the standard ones that apply to every essential oil.
  • Vegan and cruelty free. Both stated by the brand for this product.
Pūrē Standard
  • Why we bought it, and why not peppermint. We went looking for a mint and chose this one deliberately. Peppermint is the obvious seller, but Urban Sun flag it for pregnancy, for pets and for interference with homeopathic treatment. Spearmint does the same job in a room and flags none of that.
  • One ingredient, named properly. Mentha Spicata is printed on the bottle, which matters with mints, because peppermint, spearmint and cornmint are routinely sold under each other's names.
  • Amber glass, which matters here. Essential oils degrade in light. Amber glass is not a styling choice, it is what keeps the oil usable.
  • Fewer warnings is not the same as no risk. Being precise rather than generous: no diffused essential oil is fully safe around cats, and we have not tagged this pet safe. It simply carries less baggage than the obvious alternative.
  • Where we would like more. The carton says organic but Urban Sun do not name a certifying body, publish a GC/MS batch report, or state which country the botanical was grown and distilled in before it was bottled here. We have asked. Until they answer, treat organic as the brand's own claim rather than a certification.

How to Use
  • In a diffuser. Start with 6 drops and adjust for the size of your room. Urban Sun publish a 6 to 10 drop range for the oils in this range where they give a figure, but not for spearmint specifically.
  • On your skin. Dilute first, at 1 to 3% in a carrier oil such as jojoba or almond. Never apply it neat.
  • In the bathroom. A couple of drops on the floor of the shower before you turn it on, away from where you stand. The steam does the rest.
  • At the desk. Urban Sun suggest it for concentration. A drop on a tissue nearby is enough.
Safety
  • For diffusing and external use only. Do not ingest it.
  • Always dilute before applying to skin.
  • Keep out of reach of children and animals.
  • Pets. Urban Sun flag no specific pet warning for spearmint, but no diffused essential oil is risk free around cats in particular. Ventilate the room and give the animal a way to leave it.
  • Pregnancy. No warning is published for this oil, unlike peppermint. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your practitioner before using any essential oil.
Good to Know
  • The dropper insert is plastic. The bottle and carton are glass and card, but the integrated dripolator is not, so we have not tagged this plastic free.
  • It is not peppermint. If you want the cold menthol hit, this is not it. Spearmint is rounder and sweeter, closer to the herb than to a mint sweet.
  • Not gift boxed. It arrives in its own printed carton, which is handsome, but it is not wrapped.

Our Take

We went looking for a mint and deliberately skipped the peppermint, which Urban Sun flag for pregnancy and for pets. Spearmint does the same job in a room and flags none of it.

Frequently asked

How is this different from peppermint?

Spearmint is milder and a little sweeter, closer to the fresh herb than to a mint sweet, and it has none of the cold menthol hit. It also carries far fewer cautions: Urban Sun flag peppermint for pregnancy, for pets and for interference with homeopathic treatment, and flag none of that for spearmint.

Is it safe around pets?

Urban Sun publish no specific pet warning for spearmint, but we have not tagged it pet safe. No diffused essential oil is fully risk free around cats in particular. Ventilate the room and make sure the animal can leave it.

Can I use it while pregnant?

Urban Sun publish no pregnancy warning for spearmint, unlike peppermint. That said, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your practitioner before using any essential oil.

How many drops in a diffuser?

Start with 6 and adjust for the size of your room. Urban Sun publish a 6 to 10 drop range for the oils in this range where they give a figure, though not for spearmint specifically.

Is it certified organic?

The carton is marked 100% organic and pure, but Urban Sun do not name a certifying body or publish a batch analysis. We have asked. Until they answer, treat organic as the brand's own claim rather than a third party certification.

Can I use it in the shower?

Yes. A couple of drops on the shower floor before you turn the water on, away from where you stand, and the steam carries it. Do not apply it to your skin undiluted.
