Building a Baby-Safe Home: Low-Tox Swaps for New Parents
A simple, no-overwhelm guide to a baby-safe home: gentler laundry, fragrance-free cleaning, and safer body care for little ones.
New babies bring a sudden new awareness of what is in your home. Their skin is thinner and more absorbent, their lungs are still developing, and they spend most of the day close to floors, bedding, and the clothes against their skin. You do not need to replace everything at once, but a handful of low-tox swaps make a real difference in the places that matter most.
Start with what touches their skin
Laundry is the highest-impact place to begin, because clothes, wraps, and sheets are against a baby around the clock. Swap to a gentle, fragrance-free or naturally scented laundry wash, like the Nontre Fragrance-Free Baby Laundry, without optical brighteners or synthetic perfume. If skin is very reactive, run an extra rinse.
For little ones, fragrance-free is usually the safest default. You can always add gentle scent back elsewhere in the home.
Then the air and surfaces
Babies spend a lot of time low to the ground, so floors and the air just above them matter. Use plant-based, low-fume cleaners and skip strong disinfectants and bleach for everyday jobs. Ventilate while you clean, and let floors dry before tummy time. Our cleaning edit and kids and pregnancy safe collection are chosen with this in mind.
Body and bath
Keep bath time simple: a short list of gentle, low-tox products beats a shelf of scented ones. Look for fragrance-free or lightly plant-scented options in our body and hand care edit, and the Dr. Bronner's Unscented Baby Castile is a gentle, do-everything option. Patch test anything new on a small area first.
A calm, low-tox home
The pattern is the same across every room: gentler ingredients, fragrance-free where skin and lungs are involved, and good ventilation. Change things as you run low rather than all at once, and let the habit build. For a full room-by-room walkthrough, our free seasonal guide is the place to start.
