Sun-drenched grapes, soft musk and a twist of lemon: the essence of slow vineyard strolls and golden afternoons. Hand-poured in Australia in natural soy wax with a single cotton wick, in a 300ml amber jar that burns for around 60 hours.
Key Features
- The wax and wick. Natural soy with a single cotton wick.
- Size. A 300ml fill, burning around 60 hours.
- The vessel. Amber glass, 80mm diameter x 100mm high.
- Origin. Hand-poured in Australia. Vegan and cruelty free.
- The scent. Fragrance oil rather than essential oil. See the Pūrē Standard below.
Pūrē Standard
- This one is fragrance oil, and we would rather you knew before you bought it. Esencias make two kinds of candle. Their essential-oil range uses pure oils; this Signature range uses fragrance oil. If you buy candles specifically to avoid synthetic fragrance, choose one of the essential-oil ones instead. It is the single thing holding Low-Tox at 3.
- And with this scent, there was never another option. There is no grape essential oil and no musk plant. A fruity vineyard scent is an aromachemical accord by definition, in every candle from every brand that sells one. Only the lemon could have come from a real oil.
- Performance is the flip side of that. Fragrance oil throws further and holds longer in wax than essential oil does, so this fills a whole living room where our essential-oil candles fill a bathroom. On wax, wick and burn time it is the strongest candle we stock.
- The wax and the wick are still the good versions. Natural soy rather than paraffin, which is a petroleum by-product, and a cotton wick with no metal core. So the burn itself is clean even though the scent is synthetic.
- It is a big candle. 300ml and around 60 hours, in an 80mm jar. Worth noting when comparing it to the 250ml essential-oil candles, which run about 40 hours.
- Hand-poured in small batches in Australia. Printed on the jar alongside cruelty free and natural soy wax, so it is a label claim rather than just website copy.
- Amber glass worth keeping. Once the wax is gone the jar washes out and makes a perfectly good vessel for brushes, pens or a small plant.
- What we would like to see. Esencias do not publish the fragrance oil composition, which is normal for the industry but is the half point off Transparency. They also do not say where the soy is grown, which is the half point off Sustainability.

How to Use
- Trim the wick. Take it to 5mm before each burn, to stop it smoking.
- First burn matters most. Let the wax pool reach the edges of the jar, which sets the memory of the burn and prevents tunnelling.
- Four hours maximum. Longer sessions overheat the wax and the vessel.
- Never unattended. Keep it away from children and pets.

Our Take
Golden afternoons in a jar: ripe grapes, soft musk and a twist of lemon, warm and fruity without tipping into sweet. Worth knowing it is fragrance oil, because there is no grape essential oil and no musk plant.

Frequently asked
What does it smell like?
Sun-drenched grapes, soft musk and a twist of lemon. Warm and fruity rather than sweet, like a slow vineyard afternoon.
Is it scented with essential oils?
No, this is Esencias' Signature range, which uses fragrance oil. With this scent there was never another option: there is no grape essential oil and no musk plant, so a vineyard fragrance is an aromachemical accord in every brand that sells one. Only the lemon could have come from a real oil. If you specifically want essential oils, Esencias' other range uses them.
What is it made from?
Natural soy wax with a single cotton wick, hand-poured in Australia. Vegan and cruelty free. The wax and wick are the good versions even though the scent is synthetic: soy rather than paraffin, and cotton with no metal core.
How long does it burn?
Approximately 60 hours from a 300ml fill. That is noticeably bigger than the 250ml essential-oil candles, which run about 40 hours.
How do I get the best burn?
Trim the cotton wick to about 5mm before each burn to stop it smoking, and on the first burn let the wax pool reach the edges of the jar to prevent tunnelling. Burn for no more than four hours at a time.
How big is it, and can I reuse the jar?
80mm across and 100mm high in amber glass with a lid. Once the wax is finished the jar washes out and works well for brushes, pens or a small plant.
