The Seed Edit

Open-pollinated heirloom varieties, which means you can save seed from this year's plants and grow the same thing again next year. Hybrid seed will not do that reliably, which is rather the commercial point of hybrid seed.

What does heirloom actually mean? A variety grown and saved long enough to breed true, usually fifty years or more. They are bred for flavour rather than for surviving a truck, which is why a supermarket tomato and an heirloom one taste like different vegetables.

I have a balcony, not a garden. Is there any point? Herbs, lettuce and anything cut-and-come-again do genuinely well in pots. Start with basil, coriander and an oakleaf lettuce, and you will actually use them.

Do seeds expire? They lose viability rather than expire outright. Kept cool, dark and dry, most stay good for two to three years, with germination dropping gradually rather than falling off a cliff.
