The Laundry Edit

Twenty-nine products in order: everyday detergents first, then delicate and wool washes, then stain removers, then the specialists. Formats run from liquid concentrates to sheets to capsules, and the sheets are worth a look if you are tired of hauling plastic jugs home.

This is also where our genuinely fragrance-free options live. Not lightly scented, not masked with a neutralising fragrance. Actually free of added fragrance, which is a much shorter list than the category would suggest and is exactly why we flag it.

What is the difference between a wool wash and a normal detergent? Enzymes. Standard detergents use protease to break down protein stains, and wool and silk are protein fibres, so the same enzyme quietly eats the garment. A dedicated delicate wash leaves them out.

Are sheets and capsules as good as liquid? For normal loads, yes, and they are dramatically lighter to ship. Heavily soiled washing still does better with a liquid or a powder booster you can dose up.

I react to laundry products. Where do I start? With the fragrance-free options, and run an empty hot cycle first to clear residue from your machine. Fragrance is the most common trigger, followed by optical brighteners, which none of these use.

Do I still need fabric softener? Usually not. Conventional softeners work by coating fibres, which is also why towels stop absorbing. Wool dryer balls do the same job mechanically and last for years.
